We Are: Change
Introduction
We believe that, to fully embrace and live out the core values of Restore City Church, we must first undergo a profound transformation. It's not just change; it's a dedicated change that God can use to turn our lives around and lead us forward in our walk with Him.
A Difficult Passage
The scripture we'll explore today is not one that's often preached because it presents a challenging message. In Matthew 12, we find a story that raises important questions about the nature of change and the struggles we face in our journey of transformation. Let's dive into the text:
"Now when the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it roams through waterless, dry, arid places in search of rest, but it does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when it arrives, it finds the place unoccupied, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there. And the last condition of that man becomes worse than the first. So will it also be with this wicked generation." —(Matthew 12:43-45)
The Challenges of Change
This passage discusses a man who undergoes a change as an unclean spirit leaves him. However, when the spirit returns and finds the man's life unoccupied, swept, and in order, it brings seven more wicked spirits with it. This leaves the man in a worse state than before.
The core message here is that there's a danger in going back to something that God has called you out of. Many of us can relate to the struggle of returning to old habits and facing temptations repeatedly. The problem lies in allowing an unclean spirit to return because we haven't filled our lives with something better.
Believe You Can Change
The first step in making a lasting change in your life is to believe that change is possible. The enemy often convinces us that we cannot change because of our past failures and the years we've spent in our old ways. But 1 Corinthians 10:13 Says:
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
Remember, Jesus can change anyone, no matter their past. Your conviction and belief in the possibility of transformation are crucial.
Avoid the Danger Zones
The devil is always looking for an opportune time to make us stumble and return to our old ways. One way to prevent this is by avoiding the "danger zones." If you're trying to quit drinking, stay away from bars. If you're striving to lose weight, avoid places that tempt you with unhealthy food. Recognize your weaknesses and stay away from situations that trigger your temptations.
Celebrate Small Victories
Another important aspect of embracing change is to celebrate small victories. We often underestimate the significance of small changes and may be quick to focus on our past failures. Remember, it's crucial to acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small it may seem. Small steps lead to lasting change.
Conclusion
In your journey of transformation, it's essential to believe that change is possible, avoid places and situations that trigger your old habits, and celebrate every small victory. Don't let the enemy convince you that you cannot change. Embrace the process of transformation, and remember that Jesus can turn your life around.
Change is possible, and with faith and determination, you can embrace it fully. The devil may try to bring you back, but you have the power to say no and keep moving forward on your journey of transformation.
